Biography
Conductor Katie Gardiner has been leading vocal and instrumental ensembles since 2004 and has had the joy of working with singers ranging from young children to nonagenarians. She completed the doctoral degree in Choral Conducting at the Jacobs School of Music in June of 2021, serving in positions as Associate Instructor in Choral Conducting and Music Theory (Fall 2019). Her dissertation, “A Conductor’s Guide to the Music of Hildegard von Bingen,” focuses on the editions available for Hildegard’s music and provides resources to support an ensemble leader in engaging with this repertoire. In addition to leading vocal ensembles, Dr. Gardiner has held professional positions as an orchestral conductor, conducting the Second Winds ensemble at Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, IN, serving as the Cover Conductor for the Carmel Symphony Orchestra in Carmel, Indiana, and conducting the Saratoga Youth Symphony in Saratoga Springs, NY. Prior to arriving in Indiana, Dr. Gardiner served on the music faculty at Skidmore College where she held the position of Choral Director and Lecturer in Music from 2011-2018, conducting the Skidmore Community Chorus, Vocal Chamber Ensemble and teaching Music Theory and private lessons in musicianship and voice. She has additionally served as Visiting Choral Director at Williams College and the University at Albany, and conducted state and regional choral and orchestral festivals. As a passionate music educator, Dr. Gardiner also holds bachelor's and master’s degrees in Music Education (vocal emphasis and pedagogy emphasis) from the Hartt School of Music and a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from the Eastman School of Music. At Holy Cross, Dr. Gardiner will be directing the College Choir and Chamber Singers for the 2022-2023 academic year.
