Driver Certification
Years of Experience | Certification Requirements |
---|---|
3 years consecutive driving with clean motor vehicle record | Road assessment for up to a 7-passenger van only |
5 years consecutive driving with a clean motor vehicle record | Road assessment for up to a 12-passenger van |
Applying to become a Certified Driver for the College is easy! Fill out this Application, and our Transportation Department will check your motor vehicle record and determine your eligibility.
You will receive two online training modules that must be completed and a GPS form that must be signed and returned through your Holy Cross email. These should take approximately twenty minutes to complete.
Last, you will be given a road assessment with a CMSC trainer if you will be driving any of our passenger vans. These road tests are 30 minutes long and take place every Wednesday between 9am and 12pm in front of the Hogan Building. You will receive an email with a link to sign up for your road assessment once the first two steps are finished and verified.
There are certain passenger restrictions the College adheres to. If you have not had your license for three consecutive years, you will not be eligible for certification. Once you have had your license for three consecutive years, you will qualify for a 7 (Seven) passenger van and your road assessment will be in such a vehicle.
If you have had your license for five consecutive years, you may qualify to drive a 12 (Twelve) passenger van. Your road assessment in this larger vehicle will qualify you for both the 12 and the 7 passenger vans.
Please note: All vans have GPS safety monitors. Alerts for excessive speed, idle time and hard braking are sent to Public Safety. Please respect the laws of the land, and the laws of physics. For example, driving 20 mph over the posted speed limit will suspend driving privileges.
We certify all drivers who may drive for College Business by checking their motor vehicle record and completing the two online trainings, but the College only road tests those who will drive our select passenger vehicles.
Those exempt from road assessments are: HC Utility vehicles, golf carts, HC logo dining vehicles, and others of the like.

Accident Guidelines
If there are injuries, your first priority is to get medical help immediately. Do not move any injured party. In Worcester, call 508-799-8606 for Worcester Police or call Massachusetts State Police 911 on your cell phone and calmly and clearly tell the dispatcher that you have been in an accident with possible injury. Street address or landmark will be invaluable in getting help to respond promptly.
Any accident (property damage, hit-and-run or personal injury) while operating a Holy Cross-owned or leased vehicle or while the vehicle is parked must be reported to the Department of Public Safety immediately at (508) 793-2222.
At the scene of the accident, follow these instructions:
- Take steps to avoid any additional accidents at the scene.
- Do not admit fault or sign any papers claiming personal responsibility
- Do not make statements to anyone except police, appropriate Holy Cross personnel, and the other driver's personal insurance company
- Exchange with the other driver:
- Name/date of birth (DOB)
- Address
- Driver’s license # and state
- Make/model/year of other vehicle
- License plate number
- Get names, addresses, and phone #’s of:
- All occupants of vehicle
- All witnesses
- Note details of accident:
- Date, time, location, road/weather conditions
- Injuries to anyone involved
- Damages to vehicles involved (take picture with cell phone camera, if possible)
- As needed, draw simple accident diagram naming streets noting vehicle travel direction
- If the police arrive on the scene, request from the investigating officer:
- Name of officer
- Badge number and name of department
- Telephone number
- Report number, if available
Once the accident / emergency is cleared, these reports must be filled out:
- College of the Holy Cross Accident Investigation form
- Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles Operator Report Form
Both must be completed and delivered to the Dispatch Center on Linden Lane or Public Safety
The driver is also required to notify the Holy Cross Risk Manager at 508-793-2339 that day or if after hours, on the next business day.
