  • McDonald's in China
  • (Background setting:  an American student visits China, staying with a Chinese host family.)

Targeted students

  • K-5 students in Chinese immersion program
  • Reading Hanzi and Writing at Zero (no previous experience)

Time Frame

  • 450 minutes, approximately 9 class periods of 50 minutes

Unit Objectives

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to

  • Name fast food items in Chinese
  • Buy fast food in China
  • Plan a party and buy fasts food for the party with a given budget
  • Ask and respond to questions about food preferences
  • Read a text with characters using visual and pinyin cues

Can Do Statements

  • Name a few fast food items from McDonald's ad menu with pictorial or pinyin cues
  • Discover that there are patterns in Chinese characters, such left-right, top-bottom structures
  • Discover that Chinese character's structural components of meaning and sound component

  • Assessment task 1:  Buy fast food with a small budget.
  • Assessment task 2:  View and compare fast commercials and buy a fast food item based on the viewed commercials.
  • Assessment task 3: plan a party, design a survey and buy fast food for the party with a given budget
