At Holy Cross, a class dean does more than just advise students during a single academic year: each dean is assigned an incoming class, and follows that class from acceptance through graduation. By working with students throughout their Holy Cross experience, the class dean has the opportunity to build a relationship with the class and the privilege of observing and participating in the intellectual and personal development of the students over the course of their undergraduate career.
The class deans are central to the advising network available to students. In addition to the faculty advisors assigned to each student, the deans are the point of contact for each member of their class. Whether it’s students looking for advice beyond what their adviser provided, faculty members with a concerns about a student in their class, or fellowships offices looking for students who should be recruited to apply, the class dean can provide the necessary information.
Because the same class dean works with the students of their class over their four years at Holy Cross, they provide constant advising support with efforts tailored to address the different needs of each academic year. The class dean can piece together the information received from faculty and administrators, and from the students themselves, to identify resources — such as the Academic Services and Learning Resources Center, the Counseling Center, or the Chaplains’ Office — that would best serve the students’ needs. For first-year students, this may mean being directed to offices on campus that provide workshops and support services on time management and study skills, identifying a curricular path, or building reflective habits. For seniors, class deans may offer support as they reflect on who they have become and what their next steps will be during their fourth year, which represents the apex of their undergraduate studies as well as a quickly approaching transition.
