Vesla Weaver is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at Johns Hopkins, and is a nationally-recognized expert on race and the criminal justice system. Her book, Arresting Citizenship: The Democratic Consequences of American Crime Control won the Dennis Judd Best Book in Urban Politics award, and has been widely hailed in the field. Her research aims to better understand the causes and consequences of racial inequality in the United States, how state policies and institutions shape political life and identity, and especially the effects of increasing punishment and surveillance in America on democratic inclusion. She is a principal researcher of the Portals Policing Project, which uses new technology and public infrastructure to collect data and foster conversations between highly policed communities.
