Race, Respectability and the Multi-Racial South
Date of Lecture: April 1, 2019
About the Speaker: Derek Chang is associate professor of history and Asian American studies at Cornell University. He is author of "Citizens of a Christian Nation: Evangelical Missions and the Problem of Race in the Nineteenth Century" as well as a number of book chapters on the intersection of race and religion.
About the Talk: Professor Chang explores the place of Asians as neither white nor black in the segregated south. Following court decisions in 1920s Mississippi that decline to reclassify Asians from nonwhite to nonblack, Chinese Americans turn to white churches for education, race and social mobility.
His talk is one of the Deitchman Family Lectures on Religion and Modernity and co-sponsored by the McFarland Center, Asian Studies, and Peace and Conflict Studies.
