About the Speaker: Elisa von Joeden-Forgey is assistant professor and director of the masters program in Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Stockton University. She has taught courses on genocide, human rights, war, and imperialism. Her current research on gender and genocide has been appeared in the Journal of Genocide Studies and Prevention, the Oxford Handbook on Genocide, "New Directions in Genocide Research," "Hidden Genocide: Power, Knowledge Memory" and "Reconstructing Atrocity Prevention." She is currently completing a book on gender and the prevention of genocide which will be published by the University of Pennsylvania Press.
About the Talk: Von Joeden-Forgey explains how genocide is a gendered experience that targets reproductive violence and life force atrocities. She explores the definition of genocide as "an intent to destoy" and some of the activities that can be warning signs for genocide and mass violence.
Her talk was co-sponsored by the Garrity Professorship, the Department of Economics and Accounting, and the McFarland Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture.
