Future experiments in our lab may include exciting atoms in a magnetic field with a highly controllable, but changable, direction. To produce this field we anticipate using an electromagnet wound on a magnetic core. In order to change the direction of the field from one value to the next, one must first demagnetize the core. The photographs below show some work we have done to investigate the demagnetization of magnetic materials, specifically magnetic stainless steels. The high electrical resistivity of stainless steels reduces eddy current losses, making them desirable materials for use in ac magnet applications.
