Date of Lecture: February 4, 2016
About the Speaker: William T. Cavanaugh is professor of Catholic studies and director of the Center for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology at DePaul University. His areas of specialization are in political theology, economic ethics, and ecclesiology. He is author of "The Myth of Religious Violence: Secular Ideology and the Roots of Modern Conflict" (Oxford University Press, 2009) and "Field Hospital: The Church's Engagement in Markets, Politics, and Conflict" (Wm. B. Eerdmans, 2016).
About the Talk: Cavanaugh explores the myth that religion causes more violence than secular ideologies. He demonstrates how the line between religious and secular is often unclear and argues that the idea that religion is more prone to violence is an ideological justification for the violence of so-called secular orders.
