Biography

Ed Thompson grew up in northern California, graduated from California State University, Sacramento (B.A., M.A) and Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland (Ph.D.), and is now an emeritus professor. He joined the Sociology faculty in 1977 and retired in 2013, was honored as the Distinguished Teacher of the Year in 2006, the same year he was awarded Fellow status with the Gerontological Society of America. His core courses were Aging & Society, Medical Sociology, Sociology of Mental Health, Families & Societies, and Sociology of Men. He wrote professionally on issues of aging men. Since retiring in 2013, he continues to write, travel more extensively, enjoys grandfathering, and now lives on the southern rim of Cleveland, OH, a two hours rather than 12 hours drive from his son and daughter in Columbus. He enjoys retirement’s reorientation on what counts.
