Biography

Steve Skop performs regularly in jazz, classical, theater, and contemporary music settings. He has performed with notable artists including Al Martino, Steven Tyler, Danny Kalb, John C. Reilly, Dick Johnson, Michael Musillami, Joe Parillo, Krisanthi Pappas, Walter Flores, and Shirley Lewis. Performing at jazz festivals, Skop has opened for international artists Gary Burton, The Yellowjackets, and Branford Marsalis.

He has appeared in live television and radio performances and on multiple recordings. In the classical world, Steve’s regular gig is bassist for the Lowell Chamber Orchestra. The LOC is a contemporary orchestra with a strong voice for social equity, under the direction of Orlando Celas.

Steve teaches studio bass at The College of The Holy Cross. He teaches private lessons, ensembles, and jazz clinics through his private studio in Millis, MA, and his affiliation with Foxboro Public Schools, and Medfield Public Schools. Since September of 2000,  Steve has taught at Thayer Academy in Braintree, MA, coaching contemporary music ensembles, directing the chamber orchestra, and coordinating the private music lesson program. From 2007-2023 Steve was an adjunct professor at Anna Maria College, directing the jazz ensemble, teaching studio bass, jazz history, and jazz theory. He has worked as adjunct faculty at Assumption College and Worcester State University. In the summers, Steve teaches at the Foxboro Jazz Improvisation Camp and the Newport Jazz Summer Camp at Salve Regina University.

Steve has a B.M. in Music Education from the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam, and an M.M. in Music Performance from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. Steve studied under Charlie Banacos, Mark Henry, Bruce Gertz, Paul Erhard, and Richard Stephan.
