The [Organization for Tropical Studies South Africa] program taught me so many things beyond just academics. While I learned a lot about ecology and field work, I also learned a lot about myself. I really believe that everyone should study abroad if they can.

Language Immersion

Holy Cross Study Abroad students are fully immersed, active participants in the international communities in which they live. Students officially enroll in internationally renowned universities abroad. Language immersive programs have courses fully taught in the country's native language and also offer the experience of living with local families in homestays. All families who open their homes to Holy Cross students do so because they want to, believing strongly in the cultural exchange, linguistic benefits and friendships that homestays can provide.

The determination of your financial aid eligibility for studying abroad on a Holy Cross approved program is calculated the same as students who are living on campus. Your financial aid award is based on the standard cost of attendance. The College considers the standard cost of board when determining your financial aid award even if you are not directly billed for it on your student account. If you and/or your family are financing your education with loans, you should consider the total cost of attendance when determining the amount of loan you are requesting. The cost of attendance for 2024-2025 includes tuition, fees, room and board, books, supplies and personal expenses.

If you are awarded scholarships from sources external to Holy Cross, for example, a study abroad partner university, you must report the scholarship to the Financial Aid Office. Financial Aid will then determine how the scholarship is applied to your Holy Cross bill.

Should you have specific questions regarding your financial aid award, please contact the Holy Cross Financial Aid Office at 508-793-2265 or via email at financialaid@holycross.edu.

Tips and Advice
  • Talk to a student that has studied abroad.
  • Use a cost of living calculator:  https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/
  • Create a budget: download an app.
  • Seek out student discounts.
  • Participate in cultural activities through your program or at your university.
  • Hang out with like minded students with similar budget as yours.
  • Don't travel every weekend.
  • Don't eat out every day; shop for groceries and make your own meals.
  • Get a credit card with no foreign transaction fees
  • The ATM is the best way to get cash abroad. Check with your bank to make sure your ATM card can be used in foreign countries, and to find out what your bank charges for international ATM withdrawals.
  • When using your credit or ATM card, always choose the currency in the country you are in. You will generally receive a better currency rate.
  • You will need a 4-digit pin for most transactions using a credit card.

All students receive a travel credit. The credit is a good faith estimate based on the cost of a round-trip flight from Boston to your host institution. This is a one-time credit. We do not account for travel home during the holidays or winter break. Once you are accepted by your host institution, you will receive an email with the amount of the travel credit. (This is not a reimbursement; it is a credit applied to your Holy Cross bill).

All students may submit activity/club receipts for reimbursements ($200 max for students who study abroad for the academic year, $175 for students who study for one semester only). The reimbursement is for cultural and group activities that get you involved with your host community. Eligible fees for reimbursement include:

  • Fees for joining a club/society/sports team on campus.
  • Fees for participating in a local cultural event or organization (upon approval from the Office of Study Abroad).
  • Note: Gym fees are NOT refundable and reimbursement for travel is NOT refundable.
How do I get reimbursed?
  • Fill out the student ACH form. This form in on the Study Abroad application portal (sa.holycross.edu) under "Billing: Frequently Asked Questions" in the left-hand navigation menu.
  • Upload the ACH form, attach your receipts and email them to Tammi Valeri at tvaleri@holycross.edu.

Mission, Vision and Commitments

To inspire Holy Cross students to become global leaders and compassionate citizens who engage deeply with the world through transformative academic and cultural experiences. By integrating rigorous liberal arts education, Jesuit values and opportunities for high-impact learning, we prepare students to address the world’s grand challenges with hope, integrity and purpose.

The Office of Study Abroad at Holy Cross empowers students to navigate a dynamic, interconnected world as critical thinkers, ethical leaders and people for and with others. We achieve this by offering rigorous academic programs rooted in the liberal arts, immersive cross-cultural experiences that embrace global challenges and individualized opportunities for high-impact learning. Through inclusive, ethical and sustainable practices, we advance the College’s commitment to academic excellence, diversity and service to the common good, equipping students with the knowledge and agency to lead meaningful lives across cultures and disciplines.

Global Engagement for Academic Excellence

We strive to cultivate study abroad opportunities that enhance students’ academic and intellectual growth by engaging with global perspectives across disciplines. By integrating study abroad with Holy Cross’s liberal arts foundation, we ensure that students expand their academic core through rigorous, cross-disciplinary inquiry and immersive, real-world application of their field of study. These programs allow students to embrace complex global issues, strengthening their intellectual curiosity and fostering critical global awareness.

High-Impact, Inclusive Access

Study abroad is a hallmark of high-impact learning, and we recognize the need to ensure equitable access for all students. We are committed to removing financial and structural barriers to participation so that every Holy Cross student, regardless of background, has the opportunity to benefit from the transformational power of global experiences. By tailoring programs to diverse students’ needs and aspirations, we uphold our mission to provide life-changing academic opportunities for all.

Engaging Grand Challenges as Global Citizens

Holy Cross students who study abroad are uniquely positioned to encounter and address pressing global challenges—whether they concern sustainability, public health, ethics in technology or social justice. We will intentionally design programs that emphasize interdisciplinary learning, encourage critical engagement with global issues and challenge students to act as ethical stewards of the common good. By bringing the Holy Cross liberal arts model to an international stage, our students become active participants in tackling our shared challenges.

Transformative Learning Through Integration and Reflection

Study abroad offers students an unparalleled context for integrating academic knowledge with personal growth, cultural competency and lived experience. We commit to crafting immersive programs that integrate rigorous academic inquiry with meaningful cultural engagement, empowering students to develop the adaptability, agency and self-awareness necessary for lifelong learning. Reflecting the Jesuit principle of cura personalis (care for the whole person), we encourage students to reflect on their experiences abroad to gain insight into their responsibilities as global leaders.

Ethical Global Citizenship and Sustainability

Aligning with our commitment to holistic sustainability — including environmental stewardship, ethical engagement with host communities and respect for cultural heritage — we will guide students to approach their global education thoughtfully and responsibly. We emphasize a framework of mutual respect, reciprocity and accountability in all study abroad partnerships and seek to integrate sustainability principles into every aspect of study abroad, preparing our students to navigate an increasingly interconnected and fragile world with care.

Jesuit Identity at the Heart of Global Engagement

Inspired by the Jesuit values of faith, service, justice and the pursuit of knowledge, we commit to centering the Holy Cross mission in all our study abroad initiatives. Our programs promote ethical engagement with diverse communities, foster dialogue around difference and inclusion and prioritize compassionate service. Through study abroad, we instill in students a sense of purpose and hope, encouraging them to live as agents of justice, peace and transformative change across cultural and geographic boundaries.

With this vision, mission and set of commitments, the Office of Study Abroad positions itself as a vital extension of the College’s academic priorities and Jesuit identity. Through transformational global experiences, committed to academic rigor, inclusive practices and ethical citizenship, study abroad equips students to navigate the complexities of our world with thoughtfulness, purpose and integrity. In doing so, these programs not only deepen their education but also prepare them to act as compassionate leaders and global citizens who truly embody the Holy Cross mission.

Follow along as students share their experiences from around the world.
