Academic Success Workshops

Academic Services and Learning Resources facilitates workshops throughout the fall semester on a variety of academic success topics. During the spring semester, we invite faculty, staff, and student clubs and organizations to submit a workshop request to assist your audience in learning more about different academic skills. Workshop topics include time management, note taking, study habits, group projects, reading strategies, and more. To request a workshop, please complete the ASLR Workshop Request form at least two weeks (10 business days) prior to the day of the desired workshop date.

Passport

Passport is a program designed to assist promising first-year students achieve their full potential during their transition to the educational experience at Holy Cross. Each year Admissions invites selected incoming students to participate in Passport. Students who accept our invitation to join Passport are expected to complete all three components of the program.

The Three Components of Passport

Peer Assisted Learning

PAL is a series of free, collaborative, twice-weekly review sessions open to all students enrolled in CHEM 181: Atoms & Molecules, and CHEM 221: Organic Chemistry 1.

The sessions are led by Peer Assistance Leaders (PALs), strong chemistry students who have previously taken and succeeded in the course. Your PAL will help answer your questions about course material and challenge you to work with other students to practice learning strategies designed to help you succeed in chemistry.

Academic Coaching

All Holy Cross students are welcome to engage with Academic Services and Learning Resources for individual learning assistance.

Professional staff members assist students with the various academic challenges and transitions they may encounter throughout their undergraduate journey.

During one-on-one appointments, students engage in a collaborative process of developing a personalized performance-enhancing plan. Students learn to set academic goals, manage their time effectively, improve their study habits, and learn about different Holy Cross resources.

Teaching students to embrace a growth mindset, ASLR empowers students and helps them commit to their academic and personal goals. Students leave advising appointments with concrete action steps and strategies to use moving forward.

To schedule an appointment with a staff member please visit Dinand 204 or call 508-793-2713. Unfortunately, we are unable to take appointment requests over email.

Accommodations for learning differences and ADD/ADHD are handled through Accessibility Services.

The Mentor Program

The Mentor Program is designed to support students with their transition to Holy Cross. Students invited to participate in the Mentor Program include, but are not restricted to, first-year students from underrepresented backgrounds, first-generation students, students eligible for the pell grant, International students, transfer students, Passport and Odyssey students.

Administered by Academic Services and Learning Resources (ASLR) and the Office of Justice, Equity, Belonging and Identity (JEBI), groups of about five students are matched with a peer mentor for ongoing conversation, advice and friendship during their first year.

Peer Tutoring

How it Works

Peer tutors can assist in several ways, ranging from explaining conceptual material to guiding students through problem solving and providing independent learning strategies.

Daytime tutoring sessions are held as drop-in sessions on a first-come, first-served basis. Evening tutoring sessions are held by appointment only in 30 to 60 minute increments.

In-person tutoring takes place in Dinand 205 (evening and daytime). Students may also request a virtual tutoring session when scheduling an appointment.

Certification

In April 2021, our peer tutoring training program became internationally recognized by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) as a Level 1 tutoring program. CRLA certification establishes internationally accepted standards of skills and best practices.

STEM+E & Spanish Tutoring

STEM+E tutoring is a great resource for any student enrolled in intro and upper-level Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Psychology and Neuroscience courses.

Spanish tutoring sessions are offered by upper-level Spanish tutors who work with students on vocabulary, grammar, speaking, and other Spanish concepts. They can help students in courses 301 and lower.

For Faculty

Faculty Involvement

We are happy to work with faculty at whatever level of involvement they prefer.

How faculty can be supportive:

  • We invite faculty consultation and collaboration of hiring of our peer leaders, including PALs and peer tutors.
