Alter-Ego: Works from the Senior Concentration Seminar 2014
Exhibit to showcase the work of eight visual arts majors
The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery at the College of the Holy Cross will host the annual exhibition of artwork by graduating seniors who have participated in the senior concentration seminar from April 25 – May 23, 2014. An artist’s discussion will be held from 12 – 1 p.m., Thursday, April 24, the day before the official opening. An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 25, 5 – 7 p.m.
Student artists participating in the exhibition “Alter-Ego” include Carmen Alvarez, Lauren Carlo, Elisa Jimenez, Mavinee LaCroix, Bang Luu, Kimberly Mejia, John Noonan, and Regina Viqueira. The course was taught by Michael Beatty, associate professor of visual arts, and Cristi Rinklin, associate professor and chair of the visual arts.
Roger Hankins, director of the Cantor Art Gallery, advises students as they prepare their final thesis work for installation in the gallery each year, helping them to fine-tune the execution of their concepts.
“We work with each student one-on-one to help them understand what it takes to present their work. This is the culmination of an intensive, rigorous exploration of the artistic process, which evolves over the course of the academic year,” explains Hankins, “and we expect this final step to reflect a sense of professionalism.”
The majority of the work presented will be installation-based and grapple with conceptual issues, while making use of traditional art processes including painting, photography, mixed media and sculpture. Image projections and video will also be included in the exhibition. The manipulation of light, time, abstract and figural forms, as well as the interaction between images will be explored.
The tile of this year’s exhibition “ Alter-Ego”, chosen by the students themselves, references their exploration of materials, process and ideas in the pursuit of creating their work.
Rinklin says this group of students is, “attuned to a poetic representation of idea, form and space and they are pushing boundaries through manipulations of media, and at times, obsessive-compulsive expression.”
The exhibition will be on view through commencement on May 23.
