Writing is more than a skill or craft to be mastered. It is how we communicate with each other, investigate the unknown, and reflect on our development as both students and instructors.
The Center for Writing aims to support both distinct groups — faculty and students — as they pursue the Ignatian concept eloquentia perfecta: eloquence in persuasive speech and writing produced for the common good. In support of this tradition and the College’s mission to pursue excellence in teaching, learning, and research, the Center promotes writing across campus in all disciplines.
Faculty Support
Faculty support includes:
- Consultations – One-on-one consultations about course materials and writing pedagogies.
- Issues in Writing Series – Multi-part presentations and discussions of large issues in teaching writing.
- Faculty Writing Groups – Opportunities for faculty to work on their own writing with peers from across the disciplines.
- Sounding Board Sessions are a great resource for faculty interested in discussing their own writing and research. To set up an appointment in person or over Zoom, email us at centerforwriting@holycross.edu.
- In-class Workshops – Center for Writing staff run classroom workshops covering peer response, thesis statements, introductions, essay organization, documentation, and more.
Student Support
- Writer’s Workshop - The Writer’s Workshop supports students of any level, in any discipline, and at any stage in the writing process in individual, 45-minute appointments with trained peer consultants and professional tutors.
- Professional Writing Tutors have extensive experience supporting students from diverse backgrounds. They maintain additional availability and are committed to working with students on a regular basis to help achieve their long-term writing goals. Each collaborative session lasts 45 minutes. These services are especially welcoming to multilingual, international, first-generation students, and students with disabilities.
